A very common scam looks like this:

A buyer finds a kitten listed at a very low price, sends a payment, and is promised delivery. After payment is sent, the seller suddenly asks for additional fees (for “shipping,” “insurance,” or “crates”). In many cases, the kitten never arrives, and the seller disappears entirely.

 

How to Protect Yourself

1. Always request a video call

A legitimate breeder should be willing to FaceTime or video chat with you, showing the kitten in real time. This is one of the best ways to confirm the kitten actually exists.

 

2. Ask to see the environment

During a video call, ask to see where the kittens are raised. Ethical breeders raise kittens in clean, safe, home environments, not in hidden or unclear conditions.

 

3. Verify the cattery

Make sure the breeder is a registered and established cattery. Look for:

 

* A consistent name across platforms

* A real website and active social media presence

* Reviews or references from past families

 

4. Be cautious of prices that seem too good to be true

High-quality, well-bred kittens require significant time, care, and expense. Extremely low prices are often a major red flag.

 

5. Never send full payment upfront without proof

Avoid sending large payments without confirming legitimacy. Scammers often pressure buyers to pay quickly.

 

6. Watch for repeated requests for more money

If someone continues to ask for additional fees after initial payment, especially for “delivery upgrades” or “emergency shipping,” this is a strong warning sign.

 

7. Trust your instincts

If something feels off, it probably is. Take your time, ask questions, and don’t let anyone rush your decision.
